Emal researchers Ingrid Holmboe H\u00f8ybo<\/strong> and Kirstine Riis<\/strong> participated and presented at The first Craft Research Workshop held at the University of Helsinki 17-18 November 2021 Arranged by Sirpa Kokko University of Helsinki, Emal researcher Camilla Groth<\/strong> USN and Gunnar Almevik University of Gothenburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Craft Science is an established field of academic research in Finland, Sweden, and Norway. As a small and scattered academic discipline, existing in many different faculties and often subordinated to traditional academic disciplines, there is a need for dialogue and collaboration across universities and countries. The purpose of the workshop series is to consolidate Nordic craft research by developing a joint understanding of the state-of-the-art in the field, collect perspectives on methodological approaches, and to make plans for mutual research training approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an added outcome, research proposals for future collaboration and pedagogical material will be developed. There will be three workshops for craft researchers at different career levels in Finland, Sweden and Norway, including actors from outside academia such as craft practitioners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second workshop will be held at the University of South-Eastern Norway, Notodden, 4-5 May 2022; the purpose is to explore methodological approaches and the research gaps that need attention in future research endeavors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third workshop will be held at the Craft Laboratory in Mariestad, University of Gothenburg the 11-13 October 2022; the purpose is to develop research training in craft sciences and to include broader international and future perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative enables the joining of forces between leading experts in the field in order to develop novel approaches that show the direction for future craft researchers, while taking into account the views and developments in the vocational and practice-based field. This bottom-up approach and co-creation workshops will form the basis of two long term outcomes 1) a joint craft research funding application for the development of research training  2) a Handbook on Craft Research for educational purposes and for the practice field including explanatory case studies based on the experiences in the Nordic network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
